INNOVATION

The Austrian Energy & Environment Group attaches absolute priority to the on-going further development of technologies in the areas of thermal power generation (including waste-to-energy products) and environmental engineering by means of intensive research. During this continuous product optimisation process, all business divisions place considerable reliance on close co-operation with customers, suppliers and universities using state-of-the-art methods, e.g. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD-Modelling), practical tests in our test rigs and trial runs in power plants. In the area of thermal power generation one main focus is given on the continuously improvement and optimisation of performance, functionality and cost-effectiveness of our fluidised bed and grate fired boilers using biomass and residue as fuel. In the field of environmental engineering R&D projects are focusing on the improvement of the Turbosorp® process (dry flue gas cleaning technology) and the technology of wet flue gas desulphurisation.

TECHNOLOGICAL LEADERSHIP

The Austrian Energy & Environment Group has a clear strategy, which is aimed at the further consolidation of its strong, current market position in all business areas. For example, in the Steam Generator and Biomass Business Areas, the company's market ranking is to be improved primarily in the niche and special application sectors. AE&E is looking for technological leadership in these fields, particularly with regard to external circulating fluidised beds in the low cost fuel market segment. Technological leadership in the flue gas cleaning sector is to be expanded in the area of dry flue gas cleaning systems downstream of waste incineration and biomass plants, as well as in the power station wet flue gas desulphurisation system area.

FOCUS ON CO2-NEUTRAL POWER GENERATION

A reduction in greenhouse gases is a global objective and necessity. The substitution of fossil fuels by renewable alternatives fired in AE&E´s fluidised bed technologies is an important step in this direction due to the CO2-neutrality of the incineration process. Beside this application AE&E is doing research on fossil fired zero-emission power plants as well (CO2 capture).

CHEMICAL LABORATORY

The Austrian Energy & Environment Group disposes of its own chemical laboratories for dealing with research specific projects. The equipment with instruments combined with many years of experience in the fields of power station chemistry, environmental and residue analyses have made us a competent partner in the field of chemical analyses as well.
Further focuses are the examinations of damages and condition assessments of thermal power plants for determining the residual service life. The many years of company specific know-how is used for preparing examination programmes and for interpreting damages. Due to the close cooperation of experts in the fields of construction, design, calculation, erection and commissioning, but also quality assurance, condition assessments and expert reports on damages are of a particularly high value.

PATENTS

AE&E´s systematic research and development activities secure ongoing product improvements and each year lead to numerous inventions of which many are protected by patents and brand rights. In total, the Austrian Energy & Environment Group holds 350 patents worldwide.

TEST RIGS

The R&D projects are basically executed in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, the United States and Australia. Beside the necessary theoretical approach practical tests are of vital importance for the improvement of existing products as well as for the research on new technologies. Therefore the Austrian Energy & Environment Group operates their own pilot plants as well as test facilities in close co-operation with universities.
